News Release April 29, 2005
The Tsuu T’ina Nation of Calgary, Alberta, is inviting all Dene and their descendants to the 2nd International Dene Gathering in Calgary, Alberta (on the Tsuu T’ina Nation Reserve Lands – bring your tent or tipi, if you wish) July 22-28, 2005. You are also invited to attend the Tsuu T’ina Pow Wow and Rodeo following the conference on July 29, 30, 31, 2005.
The purpose of this historic conference is for our Leaders to meet and to find ways to work together amongst our people for the betterment of all Dene. Our Elders will speak of the Creation, Separation and Re-Unification of the Dene. The conference will address our history from the earliest living memories to the present day.
Starlight recently spoke of this conference in his visits across the
American Southwest. He said, “We’ve been on this continent for
thousands of years but we still don’t know one another.” Following
these visits he is anticipating strong attendance from the Apache and
Navajo from the United States, as well as Dene from California and
We would also like to open the doors of communication between all Dene and their descendants. The Dene are considered to be the largest First Nations group on the North American continent, as well as, one of the largest landowners. To make this conference a success, and to continue the learning of our Dene Youth, we are asking that a Youth Delegate be sent with each Leader and Elder. This will provide the Youth with the opportunity to witness the occasion, to participate in the discussions, as well as to learn the Dene traditions, language, music, games and history.
This conference is a celebration of our People and Culture. We look forward to meeting you, our Dene relatives in Calgary where we will enjoy traditional dancing, food, games, and music, while we get to know each other. It will be a momentous time in our People’s history, as we come together physically, culturally and spiritually and in turn face the future as a united Dene Nation.
is exactly what our ancestors would have wanted us to do.
